For the offshore chef or camp boss position, previous offshore cooking experience is preferred.  Typically, a person moves into this leadership role after working in a Cook capacity offshore for some time. The Camp Boss is in charge of the entire catering department, filling the role of Chef you would find in a hotel or restaurant back on line. His crew size may vary from 2 or 3 on up to 12 on larger rigs, having Stewards, Cooks, Night Cooks, Bakers and Galleyhands reporting to him; Housekeepers or Utility hands as well.

Having previous experience as a Chef will ultimately qualify one for this role after having learned the offshore ropes in a Cook capacity. Offshore oil rigs are well known for the quality of the food they prepare for their men and women, and is often of comparable quality to what you would find in a good restaurant.

The Chef \ Camp Boss is a responsible position; good food helps keep up morale for the hard working crews that man a rig.  Nothing beats a nice loaf of homemade bread along with a killer meal when finishing up a 12 hour shift outside in rough weather, and the crews love their cooks and Chefs. There is a lot of job satisfaction in seeing the results of one's labor having such a positive effect.

One is expected to have a proven record of cooking great food in order to qualify for this position.

Wages

Wages for Offshore Chefs \ Camp Boss positions run from 60k to 80k a year with most Catering contractors.
